Here we present findings from long-term studies of polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea (SBS) region of the U.S. and Canada, which are relevant to these concerns. We applied open population capture-recapture models to data collected from to , and estimated there were 1, (95% CI = 1,; 1,) polar bears in the SBS region in Not only does spring breakup of sea ice in the SB normally begin with such open patches of water (see the video above from last year) — driven by the powerful currents of the Beaufort Gyre, not ice melt (explained in detail here) — it may actually be necessary for the survival of local seals, polar bears and whales in spring and early summer (Citta et al. ; Crawford et al.

Arctic Ocean - Beaufort Sea: The frigid, icy waters of the Arctic Ocean are among the least explored in the world. "Victor has done a great job with his Drag Device Data Base. We must all support his efforts. He needs as many records as he can get, both the successes and the relative failures. This record is a vital part of research into survival at sea." Professor Noël Dilly, University of London. At the same time the sea ice concentration has decreased in our investigation area extending over a major portion of the southern Beaufort Sea. We .

SCOURBASE system created to store major. Seabed gouging by ice is an eminently discreet phenomenon: little sign of it can be observed from above the water surface – the odd evidence includes sea floor sediments incorporated into the ice.

Information of interest on these gouges includes: depth, width, length and orientation. Gouging frequency – the number of gouges produced at a given location per unit time – is. The Beaufort Sea (French: Mer de Beaufort) is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean, located north of the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Alaska, and west of Canada's Arctic sea is named after Sir Francis Beaufort, a Mackenzie River, the longest in Canada, empties into the Canadian part of the Beaufort Sea west of Tuktoyaktuk, which is one of the Average depth: m ( ft).

To identify sea ice types, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Ice Center constructs ice charts using several data sources including. data for polar bears and their sea ice habitat. Part of this effort involved demographic analyses to better understand the status of polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea (SB).

Between February and AugustUSGS and collaborators developed nine reports targeting specific questions considered especially informative to the final Size: KB. About ice scours were observed and analyzed over a distance of approximately km on the inner shelf of the southeastern Canadian Beaufort Sea.

Ice scours were divided into two types based on their morphology: multiple scours consisting of a series of parallel scours and ridges, and single by: Posts about Beaufort Sea written by susanjcrockford.

Fourteen bears tagged by the US Geological Survey (USGS) on or near the central Southern Beaufort Sea coast in April (near Kaktovik) will be tracked online over the coming months. The break in published USGS tagging data from March to April was the first since the project began in December.

Southern Beaufort Sea have experienced a declining trend in nutritional status. The significant relationship between several of these measurements and sea ice cover over the continental shelf suggests that nutritional limitations may be associated with changing sea-ice conditions. @article{osti_, title = {Development of a design methodology for pipelines in ice scoured seabeds}, author = {Clark, J I and Paulin, M J and Lach, P R and Yang, Q S and Poorooshasb, H}, abstractNote = {Large areas of the continental shelf of northern oceans are frequently scoured or gouged by moving bodies of ice such as icebergs and sea ice keels associated with.

We will be taken around the Beaufort Gyre by the Louis S St. Laurent, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker specially designed to smash its way through the sea ice covered oceans (sea ice can be several meters thick in places).

About a week ago, we observed this year’s sea ice minimum, which tied for the second lowest on record. In Maythe US Fish and Wildlife Service listed polar bears (Ursus maritimus) – one of the most ice‐dependent marine mammals – as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act.

We evaluated the effects of sea ice conditions on vital rates (survival and breeding probabilities) for polar bears in the southern Beaufort by:.

The wind-driven Arctic ice circulation pattern has two primary components. First, the Beaufort Gyre is a clockwise circulation (looking from above the North Pole) in the Beaufort Sea, north of Alaska. This circulation results from an average high-pressure system that spawns winds over the [email protected]{osti_, title = {Design and construction of Tarsiut Island in the Canadian Beaufort Sea}, author = {Fitzpatrick, J.
